Child in the midst

If we conceive children as only on the way to becoming something,
we rob the present of its value and promise.

ROOTS Revamp
As it starts its 7th year of publication, ROOTS has undergone a dramatic revamp! ROOTS provides weekly, lectionary based resources for churches in two magazines (for Adults & All Ages, and for Children & Young People) as well as an extensive web-site. Both magazines have helpful introductory pages looking at how the material works, the setting of the seasonal and seasonal resources which can be used in any week. The layout is clearer; the cartoons have gone (replaced with photos and artwork) and the structure is much easier to follow. If you haven’t looked at ROOTS for a while, now would be a good time to do so. The website has all the details, and you can also get hold of a free sampler.

Early Years
Nursery World, a publication for Early Years providers, has a website which allows you free access to all its articles! You have to subscribe (just giving your email address and a password) and then you can explore away! 7th July 2005 had several articles about spiritual development, and I also found some very helpful material on the Mosaic Approach (a way of allowing young children have their voices heard in decision making).

Faith Family
Faith Family is a quarterly publication for families who want to explore faith together. It comes from an Australian partnership Child in our Hands, which brings together the Uniting, Anglican, Catholic and Lutheran Churches. You can see the winter edition (!) here (though it takes quite a while to load). There are some useful tips and resources that you might want to pass on to families you know.

Developmental Assets
Developmental what?! Developmental Assets are what the Search Institute in the States has identified as the building blocks of healthy development for children and young people. Faith Family (see above) has been taking these assets and exploring how they can be worked out in a Christian environment to help give children a positive start in life. The Search Institutes’s web site is here. The drop down tab What Kids Need takes you not only to the assets but also to other areas about spirituality. There’s a strong emphasis on the community’s responsibility for helping to care for and nurture children and young people.

The Good Childhood Inquiry
Last week saw the final evidence summary from the Good Childhood Inquiry. This sixth summary was based around values. Children and young people rated values like respect, kindness, friendliness and tolerance, emphasising that these should be shown to others before being expected in return. This helps explain why they also expressed a desire to be listened to by adults and for their views to be taken seriously. To read the rest of the evidence summary click here.

BIBLE STORYBAGS
Margaret Cooling has based her latest book on the storytelling methods of Godly Play and story sacks. The 32 scripts (intended for use in schools and collective worship, but with a much wider potential) cover the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The materials for each one are contained in a bag and the story unfolds as the objects are revealed.

Good Childhood Inquiry

July 1, 2008 · No Comments

Adults are increasingly concerned about the values children are learning from those around them, according to evidence submitted to The Good Childhood Inquiry. Two thirds (66%) of adults thought that the moral values of children today are not as strong as when they were children, according to a public opinion poll for The Children’s Society.

AngelSpace IV

July 1, 2008 · No Comments

Last Sunday evening we had our sixth AngelSpace event at Rochester Cathedral and we were privileged to welcome 300 people including nearly 200 young people from all over the Diocese and other places too!

Our theme for 2008 is ‘vocation’ and this evening we entitled the event “Called to Serve. ” We invited the young people to think about what it means to serve God in the 21st Century and how we hear God’s call. Murray helped us think about responding to God’s call in the injustices we see around us. If as Christians we know how God wants to see the world and we are to be a part of that, how would God want us to respond to injustice, does God want ‘that ‘ to happen, what are we going to do about it!?’

We were particularly blessed to welcome a team of break dancers from Turkmenistan working with CMS for two months in England. They did some amazing dances which wowed the audience and we asked them to share why they chose to serve God through their dancing.

We had several organisations with us too this evening including Church in Society, CMS, Gillingham Youth for Christ and lots of amazing youth workers from around the Diocese, and all of these people made a fantastic contribution to the evening and I know that for some of these people it was a first time experience and I hope they got something amazing from the evening! A new first for us (!) was that CMS had their Youth Team and they spent the evening talking to young people and recorded a Trax16 podcast which can be downloaded from their website (google it!). I can’t wait to hear it, it will be interesting to hear what people have said. Take a look!

There was a great buzz about the place and it was amazing to see so many young people exploring their Cathedral and engaging with all the different activities. We pray that God will continue to speak to their hearts about how they can serve Him in their lives now and in the future. Please pray with us!

Children are part of our church, not an entertainment not just an investment for tomorrow, but individuals in our spiritual journey.

Harvest Resources
It’s a little early, I know, but if you want to get ahead of the game and start thinking about Harvest Resources, here are some sites with free and downloadable material:

  • Feed the Children have regional collecting points across the UK for dried goods, and also have resource packs for schools and churches. You’ll need to subscribe to their website, but it’s free!
  • The Diocese of Liverpool has a website called Giving in Grace which has a range of resources for use with adults and children at Harvest time.
  • USPG have the theme Recipe for Life and are focussing on a church in Uruguay to see what ingredients are need to make life special.
  • Turn on the Tap is challenging churches to walk for water this harvest time.
  • Harvest08 comes from BMS (Baptist Missionary Society) and has resources this year which include a downloadable resource book and PowerPoint slides.
  • Christian Aid tells the story of a farmer in Burkina Faso this year, and offers worship materials alongside Tea Time fund raising ideas.

Assembly Time
Christian Aid now offers a fresh assembly each month for primary schools, focussing on global issues of poverty and injustice. http://learn.christianaid.org.uk/TeachersResources/primary/Index.aspx With a little bit of thought, these could be adapted for all-age worship or as part of a mid-week club. Click here to find out more.

CORE Skills - young leaders
Many churches have eager 14 - 18 year olds wanting to help with children’s groups. How can you begin to equip them with the skills and knowledge they need? CORE Skills Young Leaders Module could be your answer. It’s the latest download (£3) from BRF, offering flexible material to help youngsters encounter and reflect on the skills they will need. Well worth the money!

The Child in the Bible
A few years ago, Marcia Bunge edited a seminal work called The Child in Christian Thought which explored how children had been regarded by theologians and the church through the history of Christianity. Her new book The Child in the Bible is due to be published at the beginning of September. 19 scholars explore both biblical texts and themes relating to children. You can pre-order it at Amazon.

Fegans Godly Play Introductory Days

June 24, 2008 · No Comments

Fegans Godly Play Introductory Days

‘Fegans is running a series of Introductory Days for Godly Play to introduce people to this method of exploring the Bible through storytelling, wondering together and responding. The next training day is on 12 July and places are still available. We would be most grateful if you could include the announcement below and/or attached PowerPoint slide in your church notices. The day could be of particular interest to Church children’s workers or adults interested in reflective worship and quiet-day experiences.

Godly Play - Discover a way of wondering together

The children’s charity Fegans is running a series of days to introduce people to Godly Play, which is a way of exploring the Bible through storytelling, wondering together and responding. Godly Play is based on Montessori principles and is an effective method for nurturing spirituality among children. It can also provide useful techniques for enriching times of prayer and reflection among adults. The Introductory Days themselves could be used as a quiet day experience.

Places are still available at the next Introductory Day on Saturday 12 July at St Mark’s Church, Tunbridge Wells. The day runs from 10am-3pm and costs £25 per person. Contact Fegans’ head office for more information or to book places (info@fegans.org.uk, 01892 538288).

Detling Weekend

June 17, 2008 · No Comments

This year, the Diocese of Rochester is planning a weekend of events on 21-22 June at the Kent County Showground, Detling.

Over the weekend, we will be thinking about what it means to be One People with One Purpose with One Passion.

Throughout the weekend there will be a programme of activities suitable for all ages. There will be a seperate programme for children and young people, however we need a lot of volunteers to help with this - at least 50! If you are already involved in work with children and youth work in your parish and you would like to help, then please call the office and ask to speak to Sarah Cabella who will sort you out!!!

Saturday will finish with a big party, with dancing, music, a hog roast and more! Sunday’s events will culminate in the Petertide Ordination service, to which all are invited.

Click here to look at what’s going on over the weekend…

Home is a Holy Place

The Roman Catholic Church has just published Home is a Holy Place - a resource pack to help families, schools and parishes think through what it means for home to be holy. A DVD offers interviews with a wide range of families (though very none of the children are asked what they think) and reflections on how God’s love can be seen and lived in everyday life.

What Dads Add

Coinciding with Fathers’ Day this Sunday, the Mothers’ Union, Church of England and FLAME have combined to produce a simple, credit-card sized leaflet to give to dads at baptisms. It recognises the importance of a father’s role in their child’s life, and offers a simple prayer that dads could pray for their children and themselves. Copies of What Dads Add are available from The Mothers’ Union at £1 for 20.

With Eyes Wide Open

The Barnabas website is always a good place to turn to for fresh ideas! This month the feature article from Martyn Payne is Eyes Wide Open - looking at ways of praying with children for the local community.

LightLive!

Access to over 10,000 activities for children’s groups - with over 600 more added every three months; the ability to search for themes, or according to group size or age; and all for free!!!! Sounds too good to be true? Well - it isn’t! Scripture Union have put all their Bible-based resources for children’s groups on the web; added an amazing search facility - and you can access them for nothing! Follow the link to LightLive and get yourself registered. (Of course, to do this has cost Scripture Union an awful lot, so why not use their donation facility to make a gift at the same time?)

CORE Skills Conference

There are still some places available for the CORE Skills Conference 5 - 7th September. Held at Nottingham University, it will be an excellent weekend with opportunities to explore some of the new CORE Skills modules on Transitions, Special Needs and Young Leaders as well as brushing up on the basic skills needed for working with children. Thanks to grants from the Westhill Trust and St Christopher’s Trust, bursaries of £75 are available if finance might prove a problem.

WANTED - Children’s Advisers

Both Ely and Worcester Dioceses are currently recruiting for new Children’s Advisers. It’s an exciting opportunity - to be able to help advise, resource and develop ministry with and for children across arrange of church traditions and situations. If you know someone who might be interested, please point them to the websites below for further information. The closing date for both applications is 30th June.

MUST KNOW STORIES

What would you say are the ten `must know’ stories that ought to be handed through the generations from the Judea-Christian tradition? Robert Harrison, Heather Butler and Alexander Brown have taken stories such as the Creation, David and Goliath, the Good Samaritan and the Crucifixion and re-written them for differing ages in order to pass them on. They have resisted the urge to preach and simply allow the stories to speak for themselves, making them ideal versions for use in school as well as in church contexts.
